Monday Morning Tai Chi Training Tip # 251
Jing, Chi, Shen
Most of us who practice internal arts know about the concept of jing, chi, shen. These three internal energies correspond roughly to body, mind, and spirit. Many people are sensitive enough to feel these energies as they manifest in the body. One of the most important goals of Tai Chi and Qigong practice is to refine and raise the vibratory rate from jing to chi to shen and channel this energy up the spine to the head top. This is also the goal of most of the meditative practices I know of.
People who mostly vibrate in the slower or jing range tend to be larger, slower, and like to do physical activities. People who use strength as the primary means of energy expression, like construction workers, brick layers, sculptures. Jing energy tends to be rather heavy, condenses and sinks, so I consider it yin.
Those whose energy vibrates somewhat faster in the chi range, tend to be more emotional, able to work with other people in helping ways, and are more delicate in body structure. Nurses, doctors, and teachers fall in this category. This energy tends to be neutral – a mid point between the yin of jing and the yang of shen.
The people whose energy vibrates in the shen range are the most intellectual and spiritual, tending to see events in terms of cosmic relationships. They can deal with abstract ideas and can do well with computers or arts. Philosophers, writers, painters use this energy. I consider this energy yang as it expands outward and upward.
We are born with certain predispositions towards energy patterns, and there isn’t much we can do to change this basic vibratory rate. It is best for our physical, mental, emotional, spiritual health to become aware of what our genetic makeup is and align ourselves with this energy. Of course, people are not only one vibe or another, but function most effectively in their genetic makeup. Be realistic about your expectations for your potential.
