Traditional 64 Movement Form and Partner Exercises

The spear is known as the King of the weapons. It is one of the oldest and most difficult to master of the traditional weapons of China. It was developed as a weapon to be used by a horse soldier and could vary in length from 9 to 18 feet. Needless to say, the longer the spear, the more difficult it is to use.

In present day Tai Chi practice, the staff is the long weapon most practiced. Actually, the forms are basically the same for both weapons. I would say that the spear has mostly disappeared from most teachers curriculum because of the space needed to teach and practice such a long weapon. The Gilman Studio mostly teaches spear forms and practices in a workshop setting outside or in a small group at the Studio.

The Studio offers the 64 Movement form as well The Four Part Spear and Tai Chi Sticky Spear partner exercises.
